Additional Handling, Large Package and Oversize Surcharge Calculator
Check whether a packed box triggers UPS or FedEx size and weight surcharges. Enter your box dimensions and actual weight to see Additional Handling, UPS Large Package, and FedEx Oversize classifications using published 2026 list-rate rules.
This calculator covers US ground services, including FedEx Home Delivery, for ordinary packed cardboard boxes. Estimates use published list-rate surcharges before any negotiated discounts. Base transportation, fuel, other delivery fees, and seasonal demand or peak fees are not included, so this is not a complete shipping quote.

What are these surcharges?
Additional Handling Surcharges
UPS and FedEx
Extra fees that apply to heavier or larger boxes.
Large Package Surcharges
UPS
A fee for especially large or heavy boxes.
Oversize Charges
FedEx
A fee for especially large or heavy boxes.
Which surcharge category applies?
Meeting any one size or weight criterion can qualify a package for a category, and criteria can overlap. Matching a threshold exactly, after the calculator rounds each dimension up to a whole inch and actual weight up to a whole pound, does not exceed that criterion, though another rule may still qualify. This calculator returns one estimated category per carrier under its rules. For actual billing, check the carrier's invoice and service guide, since eligibility and the charge a carrier actually bills can differ.
Size and weight criteria for US ground services, from the UPS 2026 Daily Rate and Service Guide and the FedEx 2026 Service Guide (source check October 23, 2026):
| Criterion | Additional Handling (UPS / FedEx) | Large Package (UPS) / Oversize (FedEx) |
|---|---|---|
| Longest side | Over 48 in | Over 96 in |
| Second-longest side | Over 30 in | Not a separate trigger |
| Length + girth | Over 105 in | Over 130 in |
| Cubic volume | Over 10,368 in³ | Over 17,280 in³ |
| Actual weight | Over 50 lb | Over 110 lb |
The table shows size and weight criteria only. It does not suggest that multiple charges stack, and it does not cover every packaging-related trigger in the carrier guides.
How to measure your box
Measure the outside of the fully packed cardboard box, including any bulges. The longest side is the length. This calculator rounds each dimension up to the next whole inch, and actual weight up to the next whole pound, before applying any rule. Length plus girth equals L + 2W + 2H. Volume equals L × W × H.
Boundary limits: packages over 108 in in length, 165 in in length plus girth, or 150 lb exceed this tool's supported parcel range and are outside its scope.
Worked examples
These are size and weight classifications only, not full shipping quotes.
- Box A: 20 × 16 × 12 in, 20 lb. Volume is 3,840 in³ and length plus girth is 76 in. No size or weight surcharge appears in this calculator, which does not rule out other charges.
- Box B: 24 × 18 × 12 in, 60 lb. Volume is 5,184 in³ and length plus girth is 84 in (24 + 2×18 + 2×12). Actual weight is over 50 lb, so Additional Handling applies for both carriers.
- Box C: 48 × 20 × 20 in, 80 lb. Volume is 19,200 in³, over 17,280 in³, so this is a UPS Large Package or FedEx Oversize even though length plus girth is 128 in.
FAQ
Why do the fee ranges vary?
Published surcharge amounts vary by zone, and UPS Large Package fees also differ between residential and commercial deliveries. Your own quotes and account terms may differ from published list rates.
Are peak or demand surcharges included?
No. Seasonal demand and peak fees are excluded by design. See the official UPS and FedEx demand surcharge schedules for current seasonal amounts.
Does this use actual or billable weight?
The >50 lb and >110 lb checks use actual weight. Billable weight can differ because of dimensional weight and carrier minimums. See our dimensional weight calculator.
Does this cover every packaging situation?
No. It assumes an ordinary cardboard box. Carrier packaging rules, remeasurement, and your account terms can change what is actually billed.
Methodology
This calculator and page are based on the linked UPS and FedEx 2026 service guides, applied to the scope described above. It does not cover every rule, every service, or every packaging condition, and it is not an invoice guarantee. Sources were checked on October 23, 2026.
